Djenne, the oldest known city in sub-Saharan Africa, has been a centre of Islamic learning since the 13th century. Along with the legendary city of Timbuktu, Djenne is the most important historic site in Mali, with the mosque being one of the most iconic landmarks in Africa. A designated UNESCO World Heritage site, it attracts tourists from all over the world and its Islamic Library and Heritage Centre houses texts dating back to the 14th century.

Muslim Hands has been supporting the running of the mosque since 2008, but we need your help to continue doing so. Before we began funding Djenne Mosque the Imam and his two assistants, Muezzins, Mosque Cleaners and the Heritage Centre Inn Keeper were all working without a salary and struggled to make ends meet.

We need your support to ensure that the staff who give so much to make sure the mosque is cared for are able to continue doing so. It only costs R136,000 a year to provide all of the staff at Djenne Mosque with a salary to live on.

By giving towards the upkeep of the Djenne Mosque you are ensuring that one of the most important parts of our Islamic history and heritage is preserved for generations to come.
