On the authority of Abdullah ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both), who said:

“The Messenger of Allah ﷺ prescribed Zakat al-Fitr as a purification of the fasting person from idle and obscene talk and as food for the poor. If anyone pays it before the prayer (of Eid), it will be accepted as Zakat. If anyone pays it after the prayer, then it is a charity like other charities.” - [Sunan Abi Dawud]

Zakat al-Fitr is a form of charity given to the poor at the end of Ramadan. It is due on every member of a household, including children and the elderly, and must be paid before the Eid prayer.

The amount of Zakat al-Fitr is equivalent to the value of one staple meal and must reach those in need before the Eid prayer.

The recommended amounts are:

  • R84 per person (Shafi’i)

  • R30 per person (Hanafi)
