Q. Why do we need to give Sadaqah?

A. Sadaqah, as a form of voluntary charity in Islam, serves to redistribute resources to address inequality and poverty by supporting essential services like education and healthcare. It embodies Islamic principles of empathy, social cohesion, and shared responsibility, fostering a more equitable society guided by compassion and justice.

Q. What is Sadaqah Jariyah?

A. Sadaqah Jariyah is a continuous, ongoing, flowing charity, which will continue to have a long-term positive impact long after we have passed. We can give Sadaqah on behalf of a deceased loved one or to those in need in your living years, it is one of the most rewarding acts we can do in our lives.

Q. What is the Difference between Sadaqah and Sadaqah Jariyah?

A. While Sadaqah benefits the person who receives it on one occasion, Sadaqah Jariyah continues to benefit the recipient(s) for a long time. For example, giving someone something to eat is a Sadaqah and will benefit that person in that moment whereas donating a water well where people can regularly draw water is a Sadaqah Jariyah.

Q. Who can Give Sadaqah and What are some Examples?

A. Since Sadaqah is a voluntary act of charity, there are no restrictions as to how much or who can give Sadaqah.

With offices in over 30 locations, we have a wide variety of Sadaqah Jariyah projects that you can donate to, including water, healthcare, education, livelihoods, and much more.

Q. What is the Difference Between Sadaqah and Zakat?

A. Sadaqah is a voluntary form of charity that can be given in any amount, at any time of year to whichever cause the donor wishes to give to. However, Zakat is an obligatory act of charity amounting to 2.5% of a Muslim’s annual savings above the Nisab level.

While there are no stipulations when giving Sadaqah, there can be several when donating Zakat in terms of who can benefit from the charity.

Q. What is Sadaqah in Islam?

A. In Islam, Sadaqah refers to a voluntary act of charity performed with the sole purpose of pleasing Allah (swt) and without expecting a substitute in return.

In Arabic, the word ‘Sadaqah’ literally means ‘righteousness’ and stems from the root word ‘sidq’ which means sincerity; implying that Sadaqah is the sincerity of faith and a righteous behaviour that leads to a healthy and balanced society.

Q. What are the Benefits of Giving Sadaqah?

A. The Prophet Muhammed (saw) was known to be ‘more generous than the blowing wind’ [Bukhari].

Sadaqah is given for the sole purpose of pleasing Allah (swt). However, there are a multitude of benefits in giving Sadaqah as we are following the exemplary behaviour of the Prophet (saw) when we do so.

On the authority of Abu Hurayrah (ra), the Messenger of Allah (saw) said, “When a person dies, his deeds come to an end except for three: Sadaqah Jariyah (a continuous charity), or knowledge from which benefit is gained, or a righteous child who prays for him”. [Muslim]

For thirty years, you have faithfully given your Sadaqah Jariyah through Muslim Hands, trusting us to ensure your donations reach those in need. Whether you gave on behalf of yourself or a loved one, your contributions have brought lasting change to struggling communities, improving their lives for the better.

Your generous Sadaqah donations have funded numerous projects, including the construction of schools in rural villages, the building and rehabilitation of masjids, and the installation of a state-of-the-art lighting system in Masjid Al-Aqsa. These are just a few examples of the impactful initiatives you’ve helped bring to life.

One of the most beautiful aspects of the Sadaqah Jariyah projects you’ve supported is that they empower communities to help themselves, ensuring long-term benefits. This means that you, too, will continue to reap the rewards of your donations for many years to come.

From building water wells for communities in need across Africa to planting olive trees for Palestinian farmers, we are honoured to facilitate your Sadaqah Jariyah contributions. Your support is creating a lasting legacy that will transform the lives of thousands, in sha’ Allah, for generations to come.

Giving Water: The Best Sadaqah

‘The Messenger of Allah (saw) was asked, “Which charity is best?” He replied, “[Providing] water”’. [Abu Dawud]

Water is essential for everything we do, from washing dishes to cooking food to growing crops. As Allah says in the Qur'an, “By means of water, we give life to everything” (Qur'an, 21:30). For communities without access to clean water, the hardships are unimaginable. Their health, education, and livelihoods suffer, creating a tragic cycle of poverty that affects each generation.

By giving water, you can make a lasting difference to families in need, bringing entire communities back to life. Whether by helping build a community well or contributing to our Safe Water Fund, we offer projects for every budget across Africa, Asia, and the Middle East. Access to safe water is a basic human right, and fulfilling this right through your Sadaqah is an excellent act of charity you should strive to give regularly.
