CANSA: Relay For Life

CANSA: Relay For Life

In 1985, Dr Gordon Klatt combined his passion for running with his passion for fighting cancer and ran more than 83 miles around a track for 24 hours in tribute to a young man who died of the disease. A year later, 220 people on 19 teams joined him and a worldwide phenomenon; Relay for Life was born. Today, this is the signature American Cancer Society event and is held in 27 countries.

This year, Muslim Hands had the opportunity to participate in the Cancer Association of South Africa (CANSA) Relay for Life. While also serving as an excellent fundraiser, the CANSA Relay for Life represents hope and support for those suffering from cancer. Teams raise funds before and during the Relay. These funds are then dedicated to funding CANSA’s unique, integrated service within communities across South Africa.

On Friday the 10th of March 2017, Muslim Hands sponsored a team of 20 that participated in the event and provided T shirts for 250 cancer survivors at Vygieskraal stadium, Athlone, Cape Town.

The relay was staffed and coordinated by volunteers and lasted from sunset to sunrise. Thousands came out and walked/ran a track for 12 hours straight in support of cancer survivors around the country. Each team was asked to have a member on the track at all times to signify that cancer never sleeps and neither will those dedicated to fight against it. Alhamdulilah, CANSA raised a considerable amount of money and the drive for cancer awareness was successful.

The determination, will-power and zest for life shown by the actual cancer survivors echo the qualities and building blocks of our association. Many thanks to all who donated and came out to support this worthy cause. Muslim Hands SA looks forward to collaborating with CANSA in the future and are proud to have supported an excellent local organisation
