Here's how you can have a Prophetic Eid al-Adha
Eid-al-Adha is celebrated during the 10th and 13th of Dhul Hijjah. These are incredibly blessed days and are usually celebrated with joyous festivities with family and friends.
Nevertheless, you can still enjoy this special time by following the Sunnah practices of our beloved Prophet (saw). If you are not sure how then here is a helpful guide on how to practice the Sunnah during the days of Eid.
1. Make lots of dua
Eid-al-Adha falls on the blessed tenth night of Dhul-Hijjah and the sacredness of this night is mentioned by Allah SWT in the Quran- “He loves to be worshipped in them and they hold a great status with Him” [89:2].
The Prophet (saw) said, “…and one night of them is equal to Laylatul Qadr (The Night of Power). [Ibn Majah]
As such, try your best to make as much Dua as possible during the night of Eid-al-Adha. It is also advised to recite the Quran abundantly and engage in Thikr on this night. Remember, even the simple act of wishing your family and friends Eid Mubarak is an act of worship if you make the intention of earning the pleasure of Allah (SWT).
2. Dress your best!
Ali (ra) narrates that the Messenger (saw) would command his companions to wear their best clothes on the day of Eid, to put on their best perfumes, and to slaughter the best animal they can [Hakim].
Jabir (ra) narrates that the Messenger of Allah (saw) had a (specific) cloak he would wear (only) on the two Eids and on the day of Jummah [Ibn Khuzaymah].
3. Recite the Takbir
Eid Takbir is the perfect way to make abundant Thikr. The days of Dhul Hijjah are extremely beloved to Allah (SWT) so remember Him as much as possible during these blessed days.
Eid Takbir is easy to learn and can be played as an audio in your house throughout the blessed day of Eid. That way, you can constantly listen to it while doing your Eid preparations and chores.
4. Attend Eid Prayer
The Prophet (saw) said, “The first thing we will do on this day of ours, is to offer the (Eid) prayer and then return to make the sacrifice. Whoever does so, he acted according to our Sunnah.” [Bukhari].
Eid prayer is a very important and beautiful part of this day. When you venture out of your homes to read Eid Salah, angels present themselves making Dua for you, recording the names of the people walking towards Eid Salah and Allah (SWT) showers His mercy and love amongst the gathering.
5. Make your Qurbani sacrifice (or two)
Straight after the Eid prayer, the Prophet (saw) sacrificed two animals - one for himself and one on behalf of the Muslims who could not afford to sacrifice for themselves. This Sunnah practice is known as the Prophetic Qurbani, and you too can practice this Sunnah by giving an extra animal for Qurbani.

6. Enjoy Eid breakfast
That's right - breakfast is not step one: it's step six on the day of Eid-ul-Adha!
Another narration also states that the Prophet (saw) would not leave for Eid-al-Fitr until he ate, and he would not eat on Eid al-Adha until he would return and eat from the animal he sacrificed. [Ahmad]
As such, try and eat the meat of the animal you sacrificed after the Eid prayers. However, as many of us give our Qurbani abroad so it is not possible to eat our sacrificed animal's meat. Nonetheless, make niyyah and delay breakfast until after Eid prayer to earn the rewards of following the Sunnah.
