Gift a School Kit & Unlock the Key to Education

On 14 January, the first day of the new school year in South Africa, something truly meaningful took place.

For hundreds of learners in the Western Cape, Gauteng and KwaZulu Natal, the school year did not begin with anxiety or shame, but with confidence, dignity, and hope — all thanks to the generosity of supporters of Muslim Hands’ Gift a School Kit campaign.

What Is the Gift A School Kit Campaign?

Inspired by the words of Nelson Mandela, “Education is the most powerful weapon you can use to change the world,” the Gift a School Kit campaign by Muslim Hands ensures that orphaned and vulnerable children are not left behind.

Each school kit includes a school bag carefully packed with stationery and essential learning materials, as well as a pair of school shoes, allowing children to walk into their classrooms prepared, proud, and ready to learn from day one.

The Reality Facing Children in South Africa

As the school year begins, many families are forced to make impossible choices between food and education.

Across South Africa, education remains one of the most powerful tools for breaking the cycle of poverty. Yet for millions of children, poverty continues to stand in the way of learning.

● An estimated 62% of children in South Africa are multidimensionally poor.
● Nearly five million children do not attend school because their families cannot afford the costs involved
● Almost four million children are orphans. For these children, even the most basic school supplies are out of reach.

Why Having the Right Tools Matter

When a child starts school without the right tools, learning suddenly becomes an uphill battle.

Stationery, school bags, and school shoes may seem small, but without them children struggle to focus in class, fall behind in their lessons, and feel ashamed among their peers. Over time, this lack of support can erode confidence and rob children of the opportunity to reach their full potential.

The absence of basic resources often leads to poor attendance, low self-esteem, and is a major reason for the high percentage of school drop outs in South Africa.

Education should be a pathway to opportunity, not another reminder of inequality. This is why early support at the start of the school year is so critical — it sets the tone for everything that follows.

A Life-Changing Day on the Cape Flats

The start of this school year saw Muslim Hands teams visiting two schools on the Cape Flats -Heideveld High School in Heideveld, and TLC (The Learning Centre) in Manenberg, both areas in the grips of poverty and high levels of unemployment.

Hundreds of learners received school kits and brand-new school shoes, turning what is often a stressful first day of school into one filled with excitement and joy.

For many children, the first day of school usually begins with quiet worries — wondering whether they will have shoes, whether they will have stationery like their classmates, and whether they will feel different or left out. Because of your generosity, those worries were replaced with confidence and smiles.

Voices of Gratitude from Learners and Educators

At Heideveld High School, where some learners walk more than two hours each day from areas as far as Khayelitsha to attend school, the impact was deeply felt.

Grade 12 learner Asakhanya Nkomo said:

“What you brought us today is so huge. It’s not just stationery and shoes. For us it's everything! I feel so motivated to do better now because I can see that you believe in me, and in all of us.”

The school’s principal, Sohena, related how “... some children, they came in this morning with shame in their eyes because they didn't have shoes. Look at them now - they’re shining with pride. You’ve single handedly given them back their confidence!”.

At TLC, a primary school in Manenberg, a Cape Flats suburb where high levels of unemployment, and one parent (or grandparent) households are the norm, the teachers found themselves overwhelmed with the gift of school kits.

TLC Grade Head, Insaaf Samsodien said “... every year we dig into their own pockets to supply the kids with stationery or shoes. But there is only so much we can do. I’m so blown away and grateful for these kits - they have everything our kids need. Now they can just get on with learning.”.

More Than Stationery: A Lasting Impact

When you Gift A School Kit, you give far more than school supplies. You restore dignity, build confidence, and open the door to education. You help break the cycle of poverty and create long-lasting impact through learning that will benefit a child for years to come.

Your support is also a form of Sadaqah Jariyah, as the knowledge gained continues to benefit these children long after the first day of school has passed, and earns you ongoing reward.

Make a Difference Today

As you prepare your own children for the school year ahead, remember those who cannot. Education has the power to transform lives — and your generosity makes that transformation possible.

Together, we are changing lives and shaping brighter futures — one school kit at a time.
