What Is Zakat?
Zakat is the third pillar of Islam. The word Zakat means, 'to purify'. Every sane, adult Muslim whose wealth exceeds Nisaab value is obligated to pay 2.5% of their total wealth towards Zakat.
Paying your Zakat not only purifies your wealth but helps alleviate the sufferings of poverty from millions of families across the world.

How Your Zakat Gave A Family Hope
When Salimata Traore’s husband died, her family was left without a breadwinner, and she was forced to raise her daughter Setou on her own without any support.
For widows like Salimata, raising a daughter is incredibly difficult without any income or breadwinner in the family. This is the sad reality of many women who do not have support in developing countries.
Luckily, her daughter Setou was sponsored by a generous donor and was enrolled at the Muslim Hands School of Excellence in Bamako, where she has been studying for a year now.
When Setou’s donor learnt about Salimata’s struggle in raising her child, she was moved to do more. Her donation enabled Salimata to open her own shop selling skin and hair products, allowing her to earn an income and support her family.

How Your Zakat Changed A Child’s Life
When Diakaridia Samake’s father died, he and his family were left hopeless and their mother struggled to raise her young family. Grippled by poverty, young Diakarida had to go out to work in bike mechanics. He was just eight years old.
Thanks to your Zakat, Muslim Hands was able to enrol him in a school, where he receives the best education in the region, free meals and healthcare.
His life has been transformed as he is much happier in school than he was before. Education is the key to a brighter future and a way out of poverty, and that’s what Muslim Hands donors have provided him and his family.

Established in 1996, Muslim Hands South Africa is an aid agency and NGO aiming to help those affected by natural disasters, conflict and poverty. It is a branch of Muslim Hands UK established in 1993 in Nottingham.
