Qurbani: The Greatest Sacrifice

Ramadan may be over, but the sacred month of Dhul-Hijjah has presented us with another chance for incredible rewards when we sacrifice what we love for Allah’s (swt) sake.

Our Qurbani is the greatest sacrifice – a weighty promise that everything we own is for Allah and that we submit to him entirely.

As Eid approaches, we get ready to follow in the footsteps of Prophet Ibrahim (as), who was ready to sacrifice what was most dear to him upon Allah’s command. This year, you really are making the greatest sacrifice that will have the greatest impact on the Ummah.

‘Their meat will not reach Allah, nor will their blood, but what reaches Him is piety from you.’ [The Noble Qur’an, 22:37]

When you donate a Qurbani with Muslim Hands, the meat will be distributed to those most in need, nourishing them during the days of Eid al-Adha and beyond, and bringing them joy in these hard times. Meanwhile, the essence of your offering will reach Allah – so we urge you to give a sacrifice truly worthy of this status, according to your means.

We also urge you to follow the Prophet’s practice of giving an additional Qurbani on behalf of the the Muslims who can not afford to do so.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Q. Who needs to offer Qurbani?
  • A. According to the Hanafi school, Qurbani is an obligation on all Muslims who possess wealth above the Nisab value - so if you are eligible to pay Zakat, then you must give a Qurbani.

The Maliki and Hanbali schools state that the person responsible for the household can make the Qurbani on their behalf.

However, it is not uncommon to have two or more people per household who pay Zakat. The best and safest option is for a Qurbani to be offered for each Zakat-eligible person.

  • Q. What is a Prophetic Qurbani?
  • A. ‘The Prophet (saw) sacrificed for the one who could not sacrifice from his Ummah, one who bore witness to the Oneness of Allah and [his] Prophethood’. [Tabarani and Ahmad]

After fulfilling his personal obligation, the Prophet (saw) gave an additional Qurbani in the name of the Muslims who could not afford to do so. We encourage all of our donors to revive this forgotten Sunnah and help more needy people.

  • Q. How important is it to give my Qurbani?
  • A. Qurbani is an obligation on all Muslims who possess wealth above the Nisab value - so if you are eligible to pay Zakat, then you must give a Qurbani.

This annual sacrifice also carries the great meaning of representing the sacrifice that Prophet Ibrahim (as) was prepared to make in honour of our Creator.

  • Q. When should I donate my Qurbani?
  • A. Most people choose to donate in the days of Dhul Hijjah, but some will give their Qurbani up to a month before Eid al-Adha. This year, Eid will most likely be on 16 June 2024.

As Qurbanis in each location have a set quota, we suggest you give yours as soon as possible to avoid disappointment.

  • Q. When will my Qurbani be distributed?
  • A. Muslim Hands works hard to ensure that the meat from your Qurbani is distributed to those in need during the days of Eid al-Adha.

  • Q. Which animals do Muslim Hands provide for sacrifice?
  • A. We choose the sacrificial animals based on their availability and value in each location. Whether this is a sheep, goat or a share in a cow, the reward for your Qurbani will be the same. For more details on each location, please contact 021 633 6413.

  • Q. I am not sure where to give my Qurbani, what do you recommend?
  • A. This year we are offering Qurbani in locations such as India, Malawi, Niger, Pakistan and many more. You can give your Qurbani to help those in urgent need.

Alternatively, our ‘Where Most Needed’ option ensures that your Qurbani reaches those who need it most on the days of Eid.

  • Q. What should I do if I missed my Qurbanī?
  • A. You must make up for missing the Qurbani by offering the market value of one sheep/goat to the poor. You can do this through Muslim Hands.
